Most sailing clubs in Australia offer mixed fleet sailing … which is great! We don’t all want to buy the same boat but we all like to compete together.
The problem is that some boats are bigger and faster than other boats … so we need a system that rewards the best sailor not just the person that has the biggest boat.
Fortunately there is a system that overcomes this problem. Most sailing clubs in Australia look to Yachting Victoria and their Yardstick System that rates most small off of the beach sailing boats.
The system is quite simple each boat is given a Yardstick. The faster a boat is considered the lower the Yardstick Number the slower boat is considered the higher the Yardstick Number.
The formula to establish “Corrected Time” is very simple:-
Corrected Time = (Elapsed Time x 100) / Yardstick
Elapsed Time is simply the time taken to sail the course.
How do most Clubs calculate results?
Firstly a Club usually elects a Club Result Keeping. That person is usually fairly handy with computers and Excel spread sheets and if you are lucky results are available an hour or so after the race or worse a day or two.
The “Yardstick Time” Solution!
Means anybody can work out their corrected time, the steps are simple
1. Pickup Iphone or Ipad
2. Open Yardstick Time App
3. Enter Elapsed Time (ie the time to sail the course)
4. Enter boat yardstick (from Yachting Victoria … print out the list and stick up on Club wall)
5. Done
